Day One … flying, flying and more flying

The first day of our second South American adventure began with a super early wake up call for our 7.30 flight to Sydney. The alarm went off at 5.10am (but I was awake well before that) and we bounced out of bed, dressed and ready within 15 minutes.

Our driver ... George who owns the chauffeur service we always use for our international airport runs ... arrived 5 minutes early so by 5.30 we were in the car and off to the airport. We love using George (or any of his drivers) as we get picked up and transferred to the airport efficiently and with little issue.

We checked in for our 4 flights with boarding passes for all four (three today, one tomorrow) but our luggage only booked through to Lima. We flew firstly from Melbourne to Sydney, then Sydney to Santiago and then Santiago to Lima. Then we stayed overnight in Lima at the hotel at the airport. 

The flights passed with little issue ... we had upgraded the Sydney to Santiago flight (12+ hrs) to premium economy which gave us extra leg room making for a more comfortable flight experience. Being able to stretch out the legs comfortably and not have your tray table shoved into your stomach and not having someone recline into you is well worth the little bit of extra money. NB. We always do this on long flights now … but we book the premium economy after we have purchased our tickets when we do seat selection - it’s cheaper.

Ian watched 5 movies ... The Mastermind, Song Sung Blue, Wicked for Good, Anaconda and Roofman. I watched Song Sung Blue and The Intern, read a book and half of another one, did some mandala colouring in and a little cross stitch.

We arrived into Lima just after 5pm, we navigated immigration, baggage collection (we had our fingers crossed that our bags would have made their way safely … and we were delighted to see them drop down onto the carousel), Ian grabbed some Peruvian Sol (cash) and then we headed to our nearby hotel where we are going to crash for tonight. We then have our final flight tomorrow morning which will take us to Quito, Ecuador where our adventure officially begins. A bite to eat, a shower (bliss) and a reorganisation of bags … and with this blog post going up soon … we will call it Day One!

We have been awake and on the go for 30 hours with 18 hours flight time … plus the sitting on a plane prior to take off and landing, sitting in airport lounges and transiting through 3 airports. When you live in Australia … and in Melbourne in the south … any adventure involves lots of flying! 

So stay tuned for tomorrow … when we actually begin exploring.

Day Eight … not the day we had planned

Firstly I need to update you all on our late arrival into Lima last night. Our flight was smooth and for some reason SATO/LATAM  upgraded our flights so we were travelling in Premium Economy. This means that on an internal flight within South America you get a three seat row with the middle seat blocked off and not available for anyone to sit in. The legroom is also massive! So at the end of a very long day we were able to relax and be a little more comfortable. Absolute bliss! We arrived in to Lima at about 10.30 and given our lovely seats at the front of the plane  and our luggage being tagged as priority because of those magical rows … we were off the plane, luggage collected, through immigration and street side just before 11.00pm. We were met by the lovey Rafaela and our driver Ricky who whisked us off to the car and we were on the road to our hotel. Day Four ... off to the Galápagos

A SUPER early start today ... with our alarm set for 4.45am. A quick "get ready" ... with dressing,  bags packed and we were out the door just after 5.00am. The hotel had a bagged breakfast ready for us (a slice of quiche, fruit juice, muffins, fruit tart, a cheese sandwich and some fruit would see us right for breakfast). In the lobby while we waited for Emma and Mauricio to arrive, we filled in our special declaration forms required by the Galapagos Island. A coffee helped me feel more awake and ready to tackle the day. Our trusty guiding pair arrived promptly at 5.15am as arranged and with a cheerful farewell we left Mama Cuchara and headed to the airport. As we drove along we decided not to be wimpy about our early morning pick up when we heard that Mauricio and Emma had been up and out to the airport at 11.00pm to pick up a new arrival, then home to bed by 1.00am before getting up to come and take us to the airport! Day Three … exploring beyond Quito

Today we had a slower start to the day, with an 8.00 am pick up from our hotel which meant we didn’t need to get up until 7.00! A sleep in! If only we could have both been asleep but alas we were both wide awake early. Que sera sera … we would just have to cope with less sleep than we had hoped. So up and dressed we headed out to the dining area for breakfast which is included in our accommodation. And what a spread it was … table service of freshly squeezed orange juice, coffee for me, meats and cheeses, granola, Greek yoghurt, a basket of a bread assortment, a plate of mixed fruits (cantaloupe, watermelon, papaya and a new fruit for us to try … the ground cherry or Physalis), eggs made to order served with bacon and an empanada. So much beautiful food … we took the bread basket back to our room for dinner tonight! Then off to meet Mauricio and Emma for our adventure to the south where we would get away from the city to explore some smaller localities, visit a volcano, a lake, eat lun...
